JUNE 11, 2009 AFTERNOON L12 subpod (with K20 and K38) in Haro Strait

Today we had a great trip to San Juan Island, Washington to see the L12 subpod with K20 and K38 in Haro Strait. We departed on Five Star Charter's Supercat and travelled east across the Victoria waterfront to the waters of San Juan Island, Washington. When we arrived the whales were spread out milling around. This sighting was quite nice because we had a great look at two brothers, L79, Skana and L89, Solstice milling around and being quite tactile with each other. It seemed the L12s were in a social mood this afternoon! L79 is a 20 year old, recently matured, male and his younger brother L89, Solstice is a 16 year old, sprouting (his fin is growing bigger now that he's in his late teens) male.

Belly up tail slaps!

After an enjoyable sighting of L79, L89 and the rest of the L12s milling around off San Juan Island we headed back toward Victoria making a stop at the Chain Islands off Oak Bay, Victoria on the way. At Great Chain Island we saw, yet again, an adult bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) sitting on the double crested cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) nests to take chicks and eggs. We also got a nice look at two groups of Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) with goslings! It was a nice way to end a great trip!
