MAY 23, 2009 EVENING J POD SPREAD OUT OFF SAN JUAN ISLAND

Five Star Charter's Supercat departed at 1840 this evening with a group of cruise ship passengers who are on their way back from Alaska to Seattle. We travelled through the Strait of Juan De Fuca and Haro Strait to San Juan Island, WA and had a lovely sighting of some members of the Resident 'fish eating' killer whale family J pod (Center For Whale Research Southern Resident Killer whale info).

We sat at Eagle Point, off the west side of San Juan, and watched them very spread out and milling around foraging for about 40 minutes. After a lovely sighting of J pod we had to start heading back to the Victoria Harbour but, lucky for us, picked up an active group of Dall's porpoise (Phocoenoides dalli) which came over to the vessel and were bowriding with us for a bit! Just after 2100 we arrived back at the harbour and our group of cruise ship passengers headed back to their ship for the last night of their holiday.
